Illustrations inspired by Slavic traditional painting
(Personal project)
I am always very fascinated by various types of painting of the Slavic peoples with their smooth wavy lines and graceful transition in the thickness of the petals, a variety of floral elements. Some species create whole pictures with plots that tell traditional folk tales. I was very inspired by many examples of painting on everyday objects and fabrics, and I decided to transfer a piece of this atmosphere into my own ideas for illustration.
Below you can see some examples of the diversity of such a traditional pattern as Khokhloma, Petrikovka, Gorodets painting, which I found on the Internet and taken as inspiration. It is worth remembering the kitchen utensils in the house in childhood. Through a little research, I learned a little more about the elements used.
Mainly there are gold, black (as a background), green and red colours. Red makes it warmer, gold and black enhance the expressiveness of others. The floral ornament strives to express love and respect for the nature of the native land, glorifying its beauty. You can often see a character called the Firebird - a bird symbolizing harvest and wealth.
As a result, I decided to create 3 illustrations, one of which will be dominant, and the other two will frame it. The leading image has collected elements of painting from different nations, forming the silhouette of a girl and a traditional Russian headdress, and the ribbons around are elements of a Ukrainian wreath, illuminated from the inside. Ribbons with a lush cap frame the face, elements and decorations of the kokoshnik (how the headdress called), the overall ornament creates a rich and strong image. So I tried to convey the unity, strength and beauty of cultures, their common beginning. Each of the illustrations is made on a dark background, and the elements are mainly in red, yellow, orange and green colours.
